Source: Fundora interim title defense April 8

WBC interim junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora is returning to the ring on April 8 as part of a main event against Brian Mendoza in California, a source told ESPN.

Fundora, 25, last fought in October when he beat Carlos Ocampo by unanimous decision. It was one of two big wins for Fundora (20-0-1, 13 KO) last year, the other a stoppage of Erickson Lubin in the ninth round of their fight in April which won him the interim belt.

Mendoza (21-2, 15 KO) is coming off two straight knockout wins, including stopping Jeison Rosario in the fifth round in his last fight in November. The 29-year-old Mendoza’s only losses came by unanimous decision to Jesus Alejandro Ramos in 2021 and Larry Gomez by split decision in 2019.

Jermell Charlo, who last fought in May 2022, is the undisputed junior middleweight champion, holding all four belts in the division.

Charlo suffered a broken left hand late last year while preparing for a Jan. 28 title defense against Tim Tszyu. That bout was later postponed.

It is also possible Fundora’s sister, Gabriela, will be fighting on the card, a source said. The 20-year-old flyweight is considered one of the best female prospects in the sport. Before Fundora (9-0, 4 KO) could end up on this card, though, she fights Thursday in Mexico against Tania Garcia (7-6-2).

The two have appeared together on the same card once before, in October, and both Fundora siblings won their fights.
