England second-row Charlie Ewels was shown a red card after just 82 seconds in their key Six Nations clash against Ireland at Twickenham.
It was the earliest red card ever shown since the championship began in 1883, with the lock being sent off for a dangerous tackle after his head connected with Ireland’s James Ryan.
The 26-year-old was completely upright in the collision, giving the officials no room for “mitigation” to reduce the punishment to yellow. Ryan was forced to leave the pitch, and subsequently failed a head injury assessment (HIA).
The tie was a must-win match for both sides as they look to stay in touch with France, who are chasing a Grand Slam after a 13-9 victory against Wales on Friday.
England meet France in the final round of the competition next week, while Ireland face Scotland.
