Povetkin-Whyte rematch moves to new date, site

The rematch between WBC interim heavyweight titleholder Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte has been postponed to March 27 and will now be held in Gibraltar, Matchroom Sports announced Saturday.

The fight was originally scheduled for March 6 in London. It was moved because of COVID-19-related travel restrictions in the UK.

“In the current environment we are always having to think on our feet,” Matchroom Sports managing director Eddie Hearn said in a release. “We did everything to try and make March 6 happen, but with the new travel restrictions it was impossible. Now we have something outside the box, compelling, and a unique setting for one of the heavyweight fights of the year.”

The event will be streamed in the U.S. on DAZN.

In their first fight on Aug. 22, Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs), 40, of Russia, survived two knockdowns in Round 4 to stop Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs), 32, of England in the fifth round with an incredible left uppercut that sent Whyte to the canvas for good.

The winner of the rematch could get a title shot against WBC full heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury in late 2021.
