Source: Smart missed flight, won’t play vs. Heat

NBA

The Boston Celtics have suspended Marcus Smart for Friday’s final preseason game against the Miami Heat, with a source telling ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the guard was punished for missing the team flight.

Smart, who has since joined the team on the trip, declined to address his suspension with reporters Thursday, saying he and coach Ime Udoka are keeping it “in house.”

The 27-year-old Smart and the Celtics reached a four-year, $77 million contract extension during the offseason after he averaged career highs in points (13.1), assists (5.7), blocks (0.5) and minutes (32.9) last season.

Smart has played his entire seven-year career with the Celtics, who drafted him sixth overall in 2014.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps contributed to this report.
