Chanpoker has shutdown its operations. Is this the sign of the times ? Has poker lost its thunder ? Is the economy to blame ? I dont think so, its just an operation that couldnt sustain.

Looks like they are looking to transfer player accounts to another company. Im not sure what their user base is or how much revenue they were generating through poker rooms. I’d be intersted in seeing who picks their players up. Im pretty sure ChanPoker made money, how can you not cash in on the poker business.

High Heels Poker Tour the next big thing
August 18, 2008
I just heard about the High Heels Poker Tour - HHPT.
Here is their mission statement from their homepage:
Our Mission at the HHPT is to empower women who want to become champions in the growing world of poker. The HHPT wants to provide the best competitive environment where women can explore, develop, and continue growing and learning top strategies and their “A” game. Opportunities and Recognition are what the HHPT is all about.
Could this be the next craze in Poker ? It was founded by Lauren Failla. Women have been playing a big part in poker over the last couple of years. With movie starts such as Jennifer Tilly and Shannon Elizabeth making it more prominent. This year’s tournament we saw quit a few women make it to the final tables but not the final table. There is definitely an audience for women in poker, im tired of see those dudes in the jump suits on TV. Bring more women to the tables ! Looking at their poker tournament schedule it looks pretty strong.
Check out web page:
High Heels of Poker Tour
Kind of a clever name I must say as opposed to a name like Woman of Poker (WOP) ! HHTP is much cooler.

Poker Players and their educational background
July 31, 2008
I stumbled upon this article comparing poker players and fund managers. It is published by Netgroup Investors, Matthew de Witt.
Interestingly, like top fund managers, good professional poker players generate significant profits over longer periods, but have mixed results over shorter periods as there is a random element (or luck) to the cards dealt.
So I decided to do some reasearch on past winners of the World Series of Poker Main Event winners.
Chris Ferguson - 2000 - PhD Computer Science
Robert Varkonyi - 2002 - MIT Graduate - EE CS
Chris Moneymaker - 2003 - Accountant (Masters in Accounting)
Greg Raymer - 2004 - Patent Lawyer
Joe Hachem - 2005 - Chiropractor
Jaime Gold - 2006 - Entertainment Law
Jerry Yang - 2007 - Health Psychology (Masters)
These winners do not validate the fund manager theory but the trend is that your chances are better if you are highly educated. With the exception of a few players who win, but the majority are extremely educated with advanced degrees. It shows how poker is a game of critical thinking and how the mind is in play at all time, but you cant count out luck and chance of course.
For the November Nine, here are their bios:
Dennis Philips - Account Manager for Commercial Trucking Company
Ivan Demidov - no occupation listed - Professional Poker Player
Scott Montgomery - no occupation listed - Professional Poker Player
Peter Eastgate - no occupation listed - Professional Poker Player
Ylon Schwartz - NYC Chess Hustler - Professional Poker Player
Darus Suharto - MBA Indiana University - Accountant
David Rheem - no occupation listed - Professional Poker Player
Craig Marquis - College Student
Kelly Kim - UC San Diego - Busines Analyst - Professional Poker Player
Subscribing to this theory Darus Suharto (17/2) should have the best chances if you take into account of occupation and education. Not to doubt the professional poker players. Im sure they are all smart people. Dennis Philips (3/1) the chip leader has the best chances because he is the chip leader, but I would put him at #2 for this theory. The next two Kelly Kim (25/1) and Craig Marquis (10/1) are at the bottom of the chip lead, it will be tough for them to come back. But if the theory proves to be true they will make a come back. The would be the #3 and #4 seed for the theory rating.

Betus has released 2008 World Series of Poker Main event Player odds and Prop Bets. An interested bet is who will be the first person out?

Scott Montgomery +1600
Ivan Demidov +1800

Kelly Kim is leading the odds to who will be knocked out first while Dennis Phillips is +2000. In Bodog WSOP Player Odds. Phillips is 3/1 and Kelly Kim is 25/1.Phillips is again the favorite to win in Betus odds at +350. Kelly Kim is +2800. Phillips has 26,295,000 in chips while Kim only has 2,620,000. It would be an incredible run for Kim if he can make it out of the low chip count, but I doubt it.
