Fantasy Football Notebook - Trades are they every fair ?
September 13, 2008
There are people who play Fantasy Football and love to trade. Trade Trade Trade. They think they are really General Managers in the NFL. I have had people complain that the league is boring because there are no trades and people are refusing to trade. When you offer me Ricky Williams and Chad Pennington for Drew Brees how fair is that ? Should I just take it because you want to trade ? You can just f—- off with trades.
Trades are never fair. Someone will always lose out two weeks down the season. Your player traded or tradee player will get hurt and you will be finished for the season. Your traded player will floorish and you will regret it. No matter what in trades you will regret it. I have lost sleep over trades. That’s why I hate them. The person you are trading with is always trying to take advantage of you.
Oh…I love it when they offer trades and try to convince you with stats and points that the trade is best. They will offer Thomas Jones (avg 12 pts) and Anquan Boldin (avg 8 points) for Peyton Manning (avg 20 points). Im just making this up for the sake of the argument. But they think they can actually justify a trade like this. NO ! Peyton Manning is one of the top fantasy producers and you want two 2nd tier players for him ? Are you kidding me ?
Another trade hating item is the top team in the league wanting to make his team better. Here is the scenario, the top team in the league is three games ahead of the next person. But the person has been lucky and has say….Plaxico Burress as his #2 receiver. They are unhappy with this player, so they want to unload him. They will try desparately to unload him + a backup QB that he does not use to trade for someone like Randy Moss. That is just ridiculous.
One more pet peeve. I love it when the commissioner over turns a trade because “he thinks it is fair” even though the trade was vetoed. Give me a break and your power trip. You are not a real commissioner, you are secretary. Stop trying to be Paul Tagliabue or Roger Goodell. All you do is arrange the draft, collect the money for the league, and distribute the funds. Dont take it too seriously. Dont try to overturn it. If a trade is approve, approve it. If it is unapprove, disallow it.
Im taking my stand - TRADES in Fantasy Football - I hate them. Use your skills and knowledge to work the waiver wires. Make legitimate offers.

Fantast Football Notebook – Waiver Wires 101 - 5 Tips
September 9, 2008
The key things to watch out for on waivers are “trendy” pickups. These are free agents on the waiver wire that people pickup just because they have had a good week the previous week. What usually happens when you pick these players up is that they are duds for the next couple of weeks and are one week wonders. I have been burned in the past especially with defenses, you see a hot defense but then the next week the defense gets torched for 30+ points and you end up getting negative points for defense. You will rarely find any gems. But at this point in the season you shouldn’t be looking for starting RBs, QBs, or WRS, it should be a nice K, D, or TE off waivers wires because your current player at the position is not adequate.
Here are a couple of things to look out for on waiver pickups:
• Check the player’s injury history. There are players that are always injured you know who they are.
• Check the depth chart. If the player is a 3rd stringer filling in, chances are two weeks later the player will be back on the bench. But the player can be a good filler for you team if that is all you need.
• Time spent as a free agent. There is a reason why the player on waivers. It’s because people have picked the player up as a trendy player but turned out to be duds. You can catch the player on a good week but risk two to three weeks of unproductive weeks.
• Don’t waste a roster spot for a player that is your superstar’s backup. Don’t play like your star will be out tomorrow. If you star is out for the season deal with it then. But don’t hold s roster spot for the sake of it. Look for quality.
• Following my rules of pick players on winning teams. Don’t pick a player that had a fluke week on a poor team. If his team is poor, then the player will probably not be a fantasy stud. Look for hot players but look for them on hot teams.
Be sure to check out Betus.com’s Football Contests – click here for more details.
Also don’t forget about Sportsbook.com’s Poker Promotions – click here for more details.
The hot pickups will be Matt Cassel, Tom Brady’s replacement. Matt Forte, Michael Turner, if they are still available. Eddie Royal of the Denver Broncos at WR. Chris Johnson is my sleeper, I already have him on my team though. I would stay away from Raider players until the team improves. Justin Fargas and Jamarcus Russell are tempting players but I would stay away. Oh…can you believe Patrick Ramsey ?

Fantasy Football Notebook - Analyzing My Draft
September 3, 2008
My Fantasy Football Draft was held this year. I had the 7th pick in the draft. I used the CBS Sportsline Draft Analyzer. This is the team I ended up with.
D Brees
D McNabb (R)
M Lynch
T Jones
C Johnson (R)
F Jones (R)
A Boldin
R Moss
B Berrian (R)
D Driver (R)
J Galloway (R)
R Curry (R)
D Clark
N Folk
Colts
Running back I am a little weak at but I think I have a pretty decent squad. i couldnt resist taking Randy Moss with the 7th pick. There was not a running back worthy of taking at that spot. On the serpentine / snake i took Marshawn Lynch. I would have risked it and took Terrell Owens to go WR WR RB RB in the draft but TO was taken with the 10th pick. I then picked up Anquan Bolding and Thomas Jones. With the 5th pick I picked up Drew Brees. I wanted to take Tom Brady in the 4th round but I sat back and patiently waited to fill my most important spots. Im hoping Bernard Barrian will pay off as well as Chris Johnson taking over the RB spot in Tennessee over LenDale White. But this goes against my drafting rookie strategies. But this is a later round pick. Check back for more updates on my fantasy football year.

Fantasy Football Notebook - Dont waste your time on rookies
September 2, 2008
This is another article in my series of
Fantasy Football Articles. This series is just some thoughts about my
Fantasy Football philosophies. Below are links to the series of articles.
Article 1 - Fantasy Football Draft Strategy
Article 2 - Fantasy Football Draft Tools Review
This will be article 4 - Fantasy Football Notebook - Dont Waste Your time On Rookies
My take on drafting NFL rookies early on in the draft like in the first two rounds are STAY AWAY. Dont waste your time. No matter how impactful the rookie may have, I would not recommend it. Chances are the rookie is on an awful team with an awful record and are rebuilding. Chances are the rookie is a QB that has not proven himself. When was the last rookie QB to make an impact or impression in the NFL ? You cant name one can you ? Alex Smith ? Eli Manning ? Perhaps, but not worth it over the many other veteran QBs out there.
You may miss a player like Adrian Peterson but still it is not worth is there should be plenty of players left on the board that you know will make an impact for you. Rookies and high risk players should be left for the mid to later rounds. Dont panic, they will be available. Like defensive teams and kickers dont fall for the syndrome. If you buddy starts to draft his so called “sleeper or rookie” just hold the temptation and pick the best available player. You will not use the sleeper. It may take 3-4 weeks for the player to make an impact. You need to get a good start in the season and start strong.
Perhaps only two RBs from the 2007 Rookie RB class had a deep impact, Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch. Other notables include Brandon Jackson, Tony Hunt, Chris Henry, Michael Bush. Get the hint.
Looking at the QBs JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn from last year. JaMarcus Russell still probably wont even have any impact this season as a fantasy player. Like in the real game, proven veterans are the way to go. You wouldnt pass up Brett Favre for JaMarcus Russell would you ?
Monitor rookies and pick them off waivers. If you are desparate pick or absolutely have to haveon. Pick one up with your last pick. But hold off by all means.

Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Players on Winning Teams
August 26, 2008
This is the third article in a series of articles that I am writing on Fantasy Football. The first article detailed a basic draft strategy - Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Strategy. The second article featured my opinions on Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty leagues - Fantasy Football Notebook - Keeper Leagues Love them or Hate Them. The fourth article deals with Fantasy Football Draft Tools - Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Tools.
Today’s article revisits draft strategies or just picking up players in general. My advice is pick up players on winning teams. Think about it, this is common sense, if a team is doing great - look for players on their teams. If it comes down to drafting a player on a team with playoff possibilities vs a team that is rebuilding, take the player on the winning team. The winning team will most likely score more and go on streaks. If you need a player on the waiver wire, look for a player on a winning or successful team.
Let’s say you are looking to pick up a second tier running back. Available are Rudi Johnson of Cincinnati and Ronnie Brown of Miami. Its a no brainer, Rudi Johnson of the Bengals. Purely based on the success rate of the Bengals. It can mean a difference of 5-8 points per game. I dont see the Miami Dolphins going to far this season.
Let’s say you are looking to draft a QB in the later rounds. John Kitna of Detroit is available according to fantasyfootball.com, they have Kitna ranked at 14 for QBs. Eli Manning is ranked 15. Who do you choose ? Probably Eli Manning based on the success rate of the Giants this season. The Giants could bomb, but at least you know that the Giants can be a contender, as opposed to the unpredictable Lions. Again it could be a difference of 6-8 points a week. Kitna may get hot a couple of weeks, but he may have one of those games and get under 10 points. But you know Eli Manning will atleast give you 15+ points based on his teams win rate.
That is my advice for today. Stay tuned for more. As always feel free to leave me feedback. Good or bad, it is always appreciated.

Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Tools
August 21, 2008
This is my third article about fantasy football. The first article dealt with Fantasy Football - Draft Strategy. The second article was kind of a rant and rave about fantasy football keeper leagues, which i am not a fan of. If you would like to see an article on a certain topic, please leave me a comment or send me an email. These are more advanced articles for those who have dabbled with Fantasy Football but are not getting serious with it. I may put in a basics article in the near future.
This article deals with draft tools. I personally love draft tools. There are free tool and there are pay tools. It is a small investment if you have some money at stake. I still see guys going into drafts with fantasy football magazine that they buy at the grocery store. Those magazines come out two months before the season starts, dont bother. I used to customize my own spreadsheets dumping loads and loads of data from various sites. But now I use Draft Analyzer. Draft Analyzer costs $29.95 and is catered towards the host company of your league. CBS Sportsline has a version just for their website. It is developed by company called Draft Analyzer.
Everything is automated. It will download all player data and auto update, right from your host provider. I have been using this for a couple of years. All you have to do is input your scoring system and it will automatically provide you with the best players available. Allows you to print cheatsheets. it works best if you have an internet connection on draft day. I once had a draft where they claimed it was an advantage because people had laptops. So they made us disable our wireless cards. That is BS !
Check out the video tutorial:
As you can see this is alot of data. You no longer have to have tons of wasted paper.
Another website I like is FantasyFootball.com they have some free tools also. They have tools such as:
Cheat Sheets
Draft Predictor
Draft Planner
Depth Charts, etc…
I believe Draft Analyzer is the way to go. It is a all-in-one tool. If will work offline or online. If you are heading out to a draft where there will be no Internet, just update it and take you laptop to do.

Fantasy Football Notebook - Keeper Leagues - Love them or Hate them
August 19, 2008
This is a second series of articles that I will be writing about Fantasy Football. If you missed the first articel you can read about it here - Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Strategy.
Today’s topic is about Keeper Leagues. I’ve never played in a Fantasy Football League that was a keeper league. Keeper leagues are leagues where you can carry over a player from last year’s team. If you had a good team or if you won the league this would obviously favorable to you. Chances are you probably had one of the hot players from last year.
I believe in a clean slate for fantasy football. You should always start over. The skill is to build an entirely new team and go through the draft process to assemble your team. Keeper leagues just gives you that extra advantage. If you are a true Fantasy Football General Manager, you dont need that advantage. All you need is the draft and the art of picking up free agents. People live and die by keeper leagues but I say no to keeper leagues.
Why have a draft order. There would be no advantage to draft positioning since the top players will be gone because of keeper leagues. Yes you will have a top player but if you team was awful last year and you have the #10 draft position in a 10 player league you are screwed. Unless you have a nice league where if you finished in last place last year you get the top pick this year. My leagues have generally used a random drawing for determining draft position.
That is my take for Fantasy Football Keeper Leagues. I dont like them. If you disagree, leave me acomment.
